Fear. It’s something we all feel.
But most of us have no idea just how deeply it’s affecting our health—until it’s too late.
In a powerful episode of Nurses Out Loud, I sat down with Tim James, Founder of Chemical Free Body, to talk about something most healthcare providers never address: the physiological effects of fear and chronic stress on the human body. And friends, this is a conversation we all need to have.
Fear is a Toxin
Fear is more than an emotion.
It’s a biological event—one that activates a cascade of stress hormones that, when left unchecked, can wreak havoc on every system in the body.
Tim breaks it down beautifully in this episode: when we live in a constant state of fear—whether from the media, medical diagnoses, toxic relationships, or even our own anxious thoughts—we are effectively bathing our cells in cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones are helpful in short bursts, but when they’re chronically elevated, they suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion, impair sleep, and increase the risk of chronic disease.
In other words: fear makes us sick.
A System Built on Fear
Tim and I both know from experience—within the conventional healthcare model, fear is often the default setting. Fear is used to push decisions, sell medications, justify aggressive interventions, and silence questions. It’s also deeply embedded in how we train nurses and providers—encouraging us to doubt our intuition and defer to the system instead.
This fear-based approach disconnects us from our bodies, our faith, and our God-given wisdom. And that disconnection is what keeps people sick, scared, and dependent.
Healing Starts with Awareness
The first step in detoxing from fear is becoming aware of how it shows up in our lives and our bodies. In the episode, Tim shares his own health journey—how he overcame devastating digestive issues, burnout, and chronic fatigue by cleaning up not only his environment and diet, but also his mindset.
Detox isn’t just about what we remove from our bodies—it’s about what we remove from our lives:

As nurses, we are often exposed to secondhand trauma, long hours, high-stress environments, and emotional exhaustion. And if we don’t learn to release the fear and stress we absorb, it stays stuck in our bodies.
You cannot pour from an empty vessel.
This episode is an invitation—for nurses, patients, and anyone in between—to pause, to breathe, and to detox from fear. Because real healing is only possible when the body feels safe. And safety doesn’t come from a protocol—it comes from presence, peace, and purpose.
